Full-Time Veterinary Surgeon – West Yorkshire

GVC are working with a well-established, 24/7 veterinary hospital in the West Yorkshire area that is seeking an experienced and motivated Veterinary Surgeon to join their dedicated and progressive team.

Salary: Dependent on experience
Working pattern: 4 weekdays (Mon–Fri) + 1 in 4 weekends (no sole charge)


The Role

This position offers an excellent balance of consulting, surgical, and inpatient responsibilities. The successful candidate will work alongside a supportive team of 70 colleagues, including 15 experienced vets, certificate holders in Surgery, Medicine, and Dentistry, and a proactive in-house CPD and clinical development team.

Weekend shifts (1 in 4) are 10 hours on both Saturday and Sunday, primarily focused on emergency and critical care (ECC), 30-minute sick pet consults, and inpatient management.

What They’re Looking For

The hospital is seeking an experienced all-round veterinary surgeon who enjoys a varied role combining consultations, surgery, and inpatient care.

Particular interest will be given to:

  • Vets with a background or interest in ophthalmology, to help expand existing ophthalmology services, with strong referral potential from a network of 19 feeder practices.

  • Vets with a passion for inpatient care, imaging, or hospital-based medicine who would enjoy combining consulting with hospital work.

This position is not suited to new graduates or those requiring significant in-house training, as the role demands a solid background in UK practice and the ability to manage a diverse caseload confidently.


Advanced Procedures Regularly Performed

The hospital provides high-standard primary care and referral-level treatment, frequently carrying out:

  • Oesophageal and peritoneal drain placements

  • Seldinger chest drains

  • Pig tail urinary catheters

  • TFAST/AFAST diagnostics

  • Endoscopy and bronchoscopy

  • Negative pressure wound therapy

  • Urinary catheterisation

Caseloads often include caesareans, pyometras, exploratory laparotomies, enterotomies, and enterectomies. The medicine caseload includes complex cases such as Addison’s disease, diabetic ketoacidosis, and severe pancreatitis.


Equipment and Facilities

The hospital is equipped with a wide range of advanced diagnostics and surgical tools, including:

  • Procyte haematology, Catalyst Dx, EPOC, Coags (APTT/PT)

  • Transfusion medicine facilities

  • Digital X-ray and advanced Doppler ultrasound

  • CT scanner

  • Flexible video endoscopes, bronchoscope, video otoscope, and rigid scope

  • Laparoscopy suite

  • Dental X-ray with CR7 developer

  • Multiparameter monitoring (ECG, capnography, BP, SpOâ‚‚, temperature)

  • Vessel sealing systems (Gen11, Valleylab), ligaclips, and E20 sterilisation
