Lead Veterinarian

Inner City Melbourne | Small Animal | Full-time

An established inner-city small animal clinic in Abbotsford is seeking an experienced veterinarian ready to step into a clinical leadership role with real scope to influence standards, people, and direction.

This position suits a vet who enjoys being clinically involved, but is also motivated by guiding a team, supporting development, and contributing to how a practice evolves over time.

The opportunity

This is a hands-on Head Veterinarian role within a well-run clinic that already has strong foundations in place. You’ll work closely with engaged ownership and an established team, with the autonomy to lead clinically while remaining connected to day-to-day practice.

The clinic offers a balanced caseload, solid systems, and an environment where thoughtful leadership is genuinely valued.

What you’ll be responsible for

  • Providing clinical leadership across the practice

  • Supporting and mentoring veterinarians and nurses, particularly early-career team members

  • Maintaining and developing clinical standards

  • Contributing to workflow, rostering, and team structure

  • Being a visible, approachable leader while remaining clinically active

This is not a purely managerial role — clinical work remains a core part of the position.

About you

You may already be:

  • Acting as an informal leader or senior clinician

  • Someone colleagues seek out for guidance or decision-making

  • Interested in stepping into leadership without losing clinical variety

You don’t need prior “Head Vet” experience, but you do need confidence, emotional intelligence, and an interest in shaping a positive team environment.

What’s on offer

  • Competitive salary with leadership component

  • Autonomy and trust in how you lead

  • Supportive ownership and a collaborative team

  • Strong nursing support and well-established systems

  • Sensible consult structure and respect for work-life balance

  • Ongoing leadership and professional development

The location

  • Inner-city Abbotsford

  • Modern, purpose-built clinic

  • Loyal, engaged client base

  • Interesting medicine without corporate rigidity
