Vet Surgeon – Independent Group in Northwest Oxfordshire

Role
We are recruiting a Small Animal Vet for a permanent position working across a well‑equipped small animal hospital and local branch practices in Oxfordshire. The role offers a varied and rewarding mix of hospital work alongside some sole‑charge at branch level, providing an excellent balance of consults, surgery, hospital care and ambulatory work.

This position is based on a 4‑day working week (8:00am–6:30pm), with alternative working pattern options considered. Consults are 15 minutes, with flexibility built in for complex cases and administration, supported by a dedicated Small Animal Coordinator. Rotas are designed to be realistic and sustainable, with full handover to a dedicated in‑house night team once your shift ends.

Out‑of‑hours duties are currently 1:10 full weekends (day shifts only) with occasional Saturday morning consults. Time off includes Monday mornings off following a full weekend and a full day off after any occasional night shift.

Practice
This is a large, established, independent veterinary group with a strong reputation and a loyal client base. The practice offers both hospital and branch environments, all set within attractive rural locations across Oxfordshire and neighbouring counties.

The clinical team includes 19 Small Animal Vets (with senior and director‑level support), alongside an experienced nursing and support team. Facilities include a fully equipped hospital, in‑house laboratory, pharmacy and dispensary, supported by excellent reception and administrative teams.

The practice encourages clinical freedom, supported by clear protocols and a progressive, open‑minded team approach. The emphasis is on delivering high‑quality care while supporting vets to work cases in a way that suits their clinical judgement and interests.

Ideal Candidate
You will be a confident, motivated Small Animal Vet who enjoys working as part of a collaborative and supportive team. You’ll thrive in a busy environment, value high clinical standards, and be willing to support colleagues when needed.

You’ll ideally bring:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar small animal role
  • A full UK driving licence and access to own transport
  • A positive, can‑do attitude with strong clinical aspirations
  • An appreciation for rural practice and country life

Benefits

  • Competitive salary: £38,000 – £60,000 DOE
  • 7 weeks’ holiday, increasing with service
  • Funded RCVS membership and VDS cover
  • Private Medical Insurance and comprehensive wellbeing programme
  • Generous staff discount scheme and active social calendar
  • Structured career pathway, from graduate to director level
  • CPD allowance of 1 week and £1,500 per year, plus full support for Certificates
  • Full access to XL Vet resources, initiatives and professional networks
