A senior leadership role within a large, well‑equipped hospital offering the chance to shape clinical standards, support a high‑performing team and drive the future direction of a respected veterinary service.

The Practice We’re Supporting

GVC is working with a major small‑animal hospital in the Leicester area, offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced veterinary surgeon to step into a Clinical Director position. The hospital is home to a large team of veterinary surgeons, including certificate holders across ophthalmology, orthopaedics, soft‑tissue surgery and emergency and critical care. This is a single‑site role, providing continuity, stability and the ability to lead a cohesive team.

The hospital is equipped with advanced facilities including an in‑house CT scanner, dental suites with radiography, video endoscopy, orthopaedic equipment (including TPLO/TTA systems), arthroscopy and specialist ophthalmology tools. The site holds recognised cat‑friendly accreditation and maintains a strong focus on patient experience and clinical excellence.

The wider environment supports shared learning through regular clinical discussions, monthly team meetings and structured development pathways. The hospital also acts as a nurse training centre and actively encourages certificate‑level progression for its clinical team.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the hospital’s clinical and operational direction, balancing approximately 80% clinical work with 20% leadership responsibilities.
  • Support and develop veterinary surgeons, nurses and client‑care teams through effective mentoring and line management.
  • Oversee clinical governance, ensuring high standards of patient safety, evidence‑based practice and regulatory compliance.
  • Contribute to rota planning, workflow management and resource allocation to ensure efficient day‑to‑day operations.
  • Promote a collaborative, inclusive and supportive team culture, encouraging shared learning and continuous improvement.
  • Represent the hospital within the local community and support the delivery of both routine and advanced veterinary services.

What the Practice Can Offer You

  • Salary up to £90,000 depending on experience.
  • A 40‑hour working week across four days, with a 1 in 4 Saturday rota.
  • Five weeks’ holiday plus Bank Holidays and birthday leave.
  • Relocation support where required.
  • Paid professional memberships (RCVS, VDS).
  • Employer‑contribution pension scheme and life assurance.
  • Enhanced family‑friendly leave.
  • Access to wellbeing support, counselling services and regular wellbeing events.
  • E‑car salary sacrifice scheme.
  • Extensive internal and funded external CPD, including support for leadership development.

What the Practice Is Looking For

  • Extensive Clinical Experience – Typically 10+ years in practice with confidence across primary care.
  • Leadership Capability – Proven experience guiding teams and supporting a positive, inclusive workplace culture.
  • Operational Oversight – Ability to coordinate workflow, manage resources and maintain smooth hospital operations.
  • Commitment to Development – Passion for mentoring new graduates and supporting the growth of the wider team.
  • Strategic Thinking – Interest in shaping the hospital’s future direction and contributing to long‑term service development.
