Inpatient-focused hospital role near Cardiff: complex medical workups, ECC admissions, CT/advanced imaging, 36 hours, and strong CPD support.

Who They Are
GVC is supporting a 24/7 small animal hospital service in the Cardiff area that provides out-of-hours care for a large local network of practices. Their caseload is varied and clinically stretching, with a strong focus on inpatient standards, continuity, and teamwork. You’ll be backed by experienced vets, a large nursing/support team, and dedicated client care functions—so you can focus on medicine and patient outcomes rather than firefighting alone.

What You’ll Do
This role is designed for a Veterinary Surgeon who enjoys hospitalised patient care and complex medical case management, while still keeping variety in the week. You’ll spend most of your time:

  • Managing complex medical inpatients and creating/adjusting treatment plans
  • Working up challenging diagnostic cases from admission through to discharge
  • Supporting emergency admissions and collaborating closely with the ECC team
  • Maintaining surgical and consulting capability through planned opportunities (without being in consults all day)
  • Contributing to consistent inpatient standards, safe handovers, and high-quality client communication
  • Mentoring/supporting less experienced colleagues where appropriate

Support & ways of working

  • No sole charge
  • Daily support from experienced veterinary colleagues
  • Strong RVN/ACA support plus dedicated reception/client care teams
  • Collaborative case discussion and clinical autonomy within a supportive structure

Working pattern

  • 36 hours per week (up to 4 days)
  • 1 in 5 weekends (9-hour shift)
  • 1 × 12-hour bank holiday shift per year
  • Flexible working requests welcomed

What You’ll Gain

  • Salary up to £65,000 DOE
  • 6.6 weeks holiday (including bank holidays) + buy/sell scheme
  • 5 CPD days + £1,750 CPD allowance
  • Certificate support (where applicable/approved)
  • RCVS + VDS fees paid
  • Two additional professional memberships paid
  • Enhanced family leave benefits
  • Health scheme + life assurance
  • Colleague discount scheme, paid volunteering day, cycle-to-work scheme
  • Optional private healthcare

Facilities
You’ll have access to a hospital built for high-acuity care, including:

  • 24/7 inpatient facilities and dedicated ECC wards
  • CT, advanced ultrasonography, endosurgery facilities
  • Orthopaedic and soft tissue theatres
  • Modern dental suite
  • Extensive in-house lab capability including blood gas analysis and TEG
  • Rehabilitation service including physiotherapy and hydrotherapy
  • (Confirmed) Dedicated exotic animal theatre
