The Opportunity

A family-run, RCVS-accredited 24-hour small animal hospital in Leeds is seeking an OOH ECC Veterinary Surgeon to join its established night team.

This role offers exposure to a complex and varied caseload within a hospital environment that combines first-opinion, referral-level and emergency care under one roof.

Working Pattern

  • 7 nights on / 14 nights off
  • Night shifts: 8:00pm – 8:00am
  • Dedicated night role
  • Opportunity to locum elsewhere during time off

Clinical Environment

  • Half-hour OOH consults as standard
  • Supported by a dedicated night team:
    • 1 Night RVN

    • 1 Night VCA

  • Receptionist until 10:00pm
  • Twilight RVN support until midnight
  • Part of a wider hospital team delivering gold-standard care
  • Proactive in-house CPD and clinical development culture

Facilities & Equipment

The hospital is purpose-built and equipped to a high clinical standard, including:

  • IDEXX in-house laboratory
  • Digital X-ray
  • Ultrasound
  • ECG
  • IM3 dental unit and dental X-ray
  • Orthopaedic surgical kit
  • Endoscopy
  • Tonopen

Case Exposure & Skills

The night team regularly manages a broad and advanced ECC caseload. With support and training, this includes:

  • Oesophageal tube placements
  • Seldinger chest drain placement
  • Abdominal peritoneal drains
  • Pigtail urinary catheters
  • TFAST and AFAST
  • Endoscopy
  • Negative pressure wound therapy
  • Urinary catheterisation

Surgical exposure includes:

  • Caesareans
  • Pyometra
  • Exploratory laparotomy
  • Enterotomy and enterectomy

Medical caseload commonly includes:

  • Addisonian crises
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Severe pancreatitis

Clinical Support

  • In-house certificate holders in surgery, medicine, endosurgery and dentistry
  • Day veterinary team available for complex case discussion
  • Strong cross-cover between day and night teams

The Ideal Candidate

  • Veterinary Surgeon with solid ECC experience
  • Confident in both medical and surgical emergencies
  • Proactive, dynamic and clinically thorough
  • Comfortable working independently overnight while valuing team support
  • Keen to continue developing within ECC or a specialist interest
