Veterinary Sonographer – Maternity Leave Cover

Location: Greater Melbourne and Surrounds

An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced and enthusiastic veterinarian with a passion for diagnostic imaging and ultrasound to join a highly regarded mobile veterinary ultrasound service.

This is a unique opportunity for a veterinarian who enjoys working across different practices, collaborating with veterinary teams and focusing exclusively on advanced diagnostic ultrasound.

If the idea of travelling to different veterinary clinics, performing ultrasound examinations throughout the day and providing referring veterinarians with high-quality diagnostic reports appeals to you, this could be an excellent opportunity.

About the Role

This is a part-time maternity leave cover position of approximately 33 hours per week, for a minimum period of 12 months.

The role involves approximately three days per week working on the road, generally from 8:00am to 6:00pm, visiting veterinary practices throughout Greater Melbourne and surrounding areas.

The successful candidate will also complete some administrative and reporting work from home each week.

As the service continues to grow, there is potential for the position to transition into a permanent role at the conclusion of the maternity leave contract, subject to business requirements and mutual suitability.

About the Service

This mobile veterinary diagnostic service provides advanced ultrasound services to veterinary practices throughout Greater Melbourne and surrounding areas.

The service has developed an excellent reputation within the veterinary profession and works closely with referring veterinarians to provide high-quality diagnostic imaging and comprehensive case reports.

The mobile model provides an interesting and varied working environment, with no two days being the same. You will have the opportunity to visit a range of veterinary practices, work alongside different clinical teams and see a diverse range of cases.

Key Responsibilities

The role will involve:

  • Travelling to veterinary clinics throughout Greater Melbourne and surrounding areas
  • Performing abdominal ultrasound examinations on veterinary patients
  • Working alongside a veterinary nurse during mobile ultrasound visits
  • Producing comprehensive and timely online diagnostic reports
  • Communicating regularly with the wider veterinary team
  • Participating in case discussions with referring veterinarians
  • Providing a high standard of veterinary care with compassion and respect for animal welfare
  • Maintaining strong professional relationships with referring practices
  • Managing appointments efficiently while maintaining high clinical standards

Company vehicles and the required veterinary ultrasound equipment will be provided.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent qualification
  • Current registration to practise veterinary medicine in Victoria
  • A minimum of four years' clinical veterinary experience
  • Demonstrated experience performing abdominal ultrasound examinations
  • A current Victorian driver's licence
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A professional, positive and collaborative approach

Experience in echocardiography would be highly regarded but is not essential.

Who This Role Would Suit

This opportunity would suit a veterinarian who has developed a strong interest in diagnostic imaging and is looking to focus their career more heavily on ultrasound.

It may also appeal to an experienced general practitioner who enjoys diagnostic imaging and would like the opportunity to work across multiple veterinary practices rather than remaining within a traditional clinic environment.

The successful candidate will be confident working independently, comfortable travelling between practices and passionate about providing referring veterinarians with accurate, clinically useful diagnostic information.

What Is On Offer

  • Part-time position of approximately 33 hours per week
  • Minimum 12-month maternity leave contract
  • Potential opportunity for permanent employment following the contract
  • Approximately three mobile clinical days per week
  • Work-from-home reporting and administrative hours
  • Company vehicle provided
  • Veterinary ultrasound equipment provided
  • Opportunity to work across a wide range of veterinary practices
  • Varied and interesting clinical caseload
  • Strong professional relationships with referring veterinarians
  • Opportunity to further develop expertise in veterinary diagnostic ultrasound
  • A unique alternative to traditional general-practice veterinary work

Applicants are encouraged to submit a current CV and cover letter outlining:

  • Your current experience with veterinary ultrasound
