Feeling stuck in your veterinary career? You’re not alone.
Whether it’s a practice culture that’s run its course, a state that no longer fits your lifestyle, or simply the sense that there has to be a better way to do vet med – that feeling is a signal worth listening to. And for a growing number of DVMs across the United States, relief work is the answer. Not a stopgap. A genuine career choice, built around how you want to work.
Burnout isn’t an inevitable part of veterinary medicine, and should not be accepted nor expected.
It’s a symptom of the wrong working arrangement. If you’ve ever wished your career could flex around your life rather than the other way around, relief work might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.
There’s Another Way to Do Vet Med
Relief veterinarians work flexibly, stepping into practices on a short or long-term basis to cover demand, staff gaps, or periods of change. You choose the schedule: mornings, weekends, block bookings, or longer stretches. You choose the locations. You stay clinically active without being tied to one practice’s rota, politics, or pace.
It’s a model that gives you back control over your time, your earnings, and your career trajectory. And with veterinary burnout continuing to shape the conversation across the profession, that control matters more than ever.
Relief work also gives you something an interview never can: an inside view. You see how a practice really runs, how the team culture feels, and how they treat their veterinarians – before you commit to anything. At GVC, we actively encourage this route.
The GVC Difference
App-based relief platforms certainly have their place. For a quick, transactional booking, they can work and add value. But veterinary careers are rarely that simple – and most DVMs exploring relief work have questions that an algorithm can’t answer.
What are market rates actually like in this city? What’s the culture like at this practice? How large is the team? What’s the caseload, the equipment, the pace? Is there any flexibility in the advertised hours?
These are the conversations that shape whether an assignment is just a shift, or the start of something that fits your career. GVC’s advisors bring real, on-the-ground knowledge to every conversation – discussing not just availability, but the specifics of individual practices, facilities, team dynamics, and local market conditions. We’re not matching you to a vacancy. We’re matching you to the right environment.
Platforms fill shifts. Partners build careers. At GVC, every conversation is with someone who understands the difference.
Flexibility That’s Actually Flexible
When GVC says flexible, we mean it in every direction.
Opportunities range from short-term cover to longer placements, across mornings, weekends, and multi-week blocks. Multi-state opportunities mean that if you’re licensed in more than one state – or open to expanding your licensure – we can match you to a wider pool of practices.
Payment is weekly, and you choose the structure: 1099 for a higher take-home and independent contractor status, or W2 for employed benefits and stability. Most relief platforms default to one model and expect you to adapt. GVC puts that choice in your hands from the start.
No Penalties. No Barriers.
Some of the largest-established relief agency providers impose conversion fees of up to $150,000 if a practice tries to hire a relief DVM permanently. That’s not a policy designed to serve veterinarians or practices. It’s a deterrent, plain and simple – structured to keep DVMs locked into an agreement rather than finding a long-term home where they genuinely thrive.
GVC operates on a completely different philosophy.
We actively encourage permanent conversions. If a practice loves working with a GVC DVM and wants to bring them on permanently, we offer a discounted conversion fee that reduces the longer the DVM has worked with them on a relief basis. The more time invested in building a relationship, the lower the barrier to making it permanent.
Our goal is to help the practices we partner with grow their business, their teams and build lasting careers, not to penalise them for finding a great fit. To add value to the veterinary industry and make a lasting difference, we want to increase the headcount of our partner practices, whether that’s Relief or Permanent.
Support From First Conversation Through to Starting
A new role (especially one in a different state or a different working pattern) comes with questions. Concerns about leaving something stable. Uncertainty about whether a fresh environment will actually be better. Worry about stepping into the unknown without a support network behind you.
That’s exactly where GVC’s VetXperts earn their name.
Our specialist advisors don’t just send over a list of vacancies. They take the time to understand your situation, your clinical interests, and what you’re really looking for – then work to match you with practices that fit. From the first conversation through to your first day, you have someone in your corner who understands the veterinary world, not just the recruitment process.
A Network That Opens Doors
GVC’s global talent network spans over 100,000 veterinary professionals, with a growing US-focused relief cohort available for short-term and flexible work.
Our US headquarters is based in Dallas, Texas, and our clinic partnerships – including names like VCA, Alliance Animal Health, and Mars Veterinary Health – reflect the quality of the placements we make.
